This guy was playing high school soccer in rural Florida 4 years ago

And that’s why we need more youth academies here in the states. There’s so many gems who never get noticed by pro scouts

I mean, he WAS brought over and identified by an academy, and he didn't have to pay a cent for it. And this guy was in the ivory coast, and someone still found him.

Our pay to play system is a joke because it takes delusional parents and lets them think the only thing that's stopping their kid from being the next Diomande is 20k/yr in training. It becomes a vicious cycle until you are basically also doing this or you're playing kids who barely know the rules and can barely jog the length of the field. There's no reason why 99%of these guys don't have enough competition to play against people that leave near them but the system forces them to fly all over to play people instead.

But the real reason we don't develop talent, in my opinion, is the culture. Everything from our food to our fitness programs to our schedules doesn't fit developing kids that get identified by an academy in the first place. Real talent is developed on the playground on a daily basis - where do you see groups of talented young kids playing pickup soccer in this country?

Pretty common in California honestly.

Growing up, all we did was play soccer during recess at school. There were a bunch of foreign kids (Ukrainian/Russians) who were adopted due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, so that helped. But we created a middle school team and steamrolled all the other teams in our district but once we went to different high schools, it became too expensive to continue playing for most of us because club teams were superior to high school varsity teams.

Meanwhile MLS academies are cranking out the highest level talent ever and the league guality has never been higher. Teenagers are coming into the league and not only getting minutes but taking those minutes from seasoned pros both foreign and domestic.

The quality of coaching has also improved drastically. Do yourself a favor and check out an u13 MLS Next academy match (free and fully funded by the clubs). The speed of play, skill and quality is impressive. It's not all doom and gloom.

If you live in a city with an MLS side that is, there is only 30 sides for a population of 300 million spread out across one of the largest countries on earth.

I mean, the high school already scouted him and brought him over from the Ivory Coast, no?

17. u/Beennu · 2026-10-21 21:47 UTC

According to his wikipedia article, yes, moved to the US at 15

W high school recruitment.

Get him a job as Head of Youth Development.

Yes and no.

So he was recruited by an academy from Africa, but a lot of kids in those academies play high school soccer in addition to the academy season, and I do remember reading that he played for yulee high school for one season before playing for the academy.

It's also worth noting that the goal of an academy like the one he went to is to create D1 NCAA talent. However, he also left at 15, a year before he'd be eligible for a professional team.

My guess is that his family sent him over there, hoping he could use soccer to get a D1 scholarship, and then the academy was like, uhh no, D1 is way below your level bud. So people knew he was good but just nowhere near this good

the story i had read was he was good enough to go pro in europe at 15 but since he didn’t have any sort of citizenship or parents from europe he wasn’t allowed to sign for a professional club until 18 so he was sent over to florida to help his development until he was able to go pro. never fact checked if it’s true but kinda makes sense. also really dumb he couldn’t go pro at 15 if it is true
