Sergio Rico and his family fled to another room but the thieves reportedly broke down the door and assaulted him and wife Alba Silva before taking valuables

A Spanish soccer player and his wife were victims of an armed robbery in their home, according to reports.

At about 10 p.m. local time on Monday, Oct. 19, five hooded intruders, carrying guns and wearing gloves, broke into the family’s residence in Seville, Spain, according to Spanish television channel Telecinco .

Goalkeeper Sergio Rico, 33, and his wife Alba Silva, an influencer, were eating at home with their children, Carla, 2, and 3-month-old Sergio, as well as Silva’s mom, at the time of the incident, local newspaper El Mundo reported.

Rico, who made his sole appearance for the Spanish national team in 2016, and his wife and children all ran to another room to protect themselves from the thieves, the outlet reported.

However, the intruders reportedly broke down the door and assaulted both Rico and Silva before stealing their valuables, per local Spanish outlet ABC . Rico later spoke to Telecinco about the incident, claiming that some reports of violence against him were exaggerated.

Sources close to the former Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham player told Telecinco that the incident is believed to have been an organized robbery. Silva, who married Rico in June 2022, told the outlet’s Vamos a ver news show that the incident has been reported to the police.

The day after the attack, she took to her Instagram Stories to reassure her 255,000 followers that her family was safe.

“I’m still in shock after last night; I have no words,” she wrote, translated from Spanish, “But the only thing that truly matters is that, thank God, our family is safe. Thank you all for your concern.”

The incident was not the first time one of Rico’s properties has been targeted by thieves. In January 2021, during his time with PSG, his home in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a Paris suburb, was burglarized.

At the time of the incident, during which the thieves stole €25,000 (over $28,000) in cash, as well as luxury watches and jewelry, he was playing for the French champions in a league game, Le Parisien reported.

Almost two and a half years later, in May 2023, Rico was seriously injured in a horseback riding accident in Huelva, about 58 miles west of Seville. He spent three weeks in a coma, with reports suggesting he narrowly avoided death.

He was discharged from the hospital in August 2023, almost three months after the accident, per The New York Times .
